Inflatable rides banned!

Hello its John again...on Monday I blogged about the inflatable slide that I reluctantly let the kiddos go down. Today there was an article in the newspaper about how this exact same slide flipped over while a boy was on it..YIKES! Let this be a lesson to you all...if its a carny ride don't get on it!

more festival fun

I would have to say that the "hit"  of the goetta festival,
besides the pricey slide rides of course, was the funnel cake!

YUM.

YUM.

Goetta Festival

First of all...for those who don't live in Cincinnati...what is goetta? Goetta is an old german peasant dish that was meant to extend meat products by mixing it with oats. Its another donation to the world from Cincinnati...just like cornhole and Carmen Electra! Its a dish worth celebrating, right? Anyways..we went to the Goetta Festival, and it was kinda fun. Lots of different types of goetta, goetta omellete, goetta sausage, goetta burgers, and others that I have forgotten. Live music, lots of good food, antiques, people watching, arts and crafts and of course rides!

Paloma and Lio saw the giant inflatable slide from a distance and they decided that it would be fun to go down this giant bouncy slide. So..we walked up to the Carny and paid her the money. One dollar for one time down the slide! ...pricey! and of course after they went down once, they wanted to go again. I was saying "no" but vicki talked me into shelling our another 2 bucks to hand over. The kids did enjoy it alot. Overall we had goetta balls, funnel cake and frozen lemonade...can you get better than that? It was a beautiful day and will live in my memory, and my digestive tract for a long time.

tired

This morning we all went for a little exercise - bike riding and roller blading!  The kids were really great on their bikes (lots of stamina), and John and I did well considering we haven't roller bladed in about 10 years.  Paloma didn't even make it home before falling asleep, and John and Lio took in a little snuggle time shortly after lunch.

*On a totally random note, I'm going to see if John would like to guest blog for me once a week.  Who would be entertained by that?  Please leave a comment to encourage him!!!

latest gadget

Remember when I said that I was going to get something cool if I kept those Nike shoes?  Well, the shoes still aren't great, and my feet actually hurt a lot after consecutive days of running.  I don't know if it's the shoes or just me getting used to running, and I don't even know where I would go with shoes after being at that store for hours on end.  So I decided to keep the shoes and just do it  (get it - Nike slogan?).

John actually got this as a Father's Day gift - now that he's Mr. Running Man he needed to see his distance and times, all while listening to some tunes.
Of course he picked his favorite color blue for the ipod nano, and it straps to his arm so he can track all of those important things.  What I think is pretty cool is the chip that fits into Nike shoes.  It records your stride and pace so it's truly individual.

John and I went to the track to calibrate our individual chips, so now we are ready to start monitoring our runs, and can even run distances that we don't know ahead of time since the ipod will tell us how far we are running.

Hopefully after all of this investing in gear I will keep up with this running thing.  Today isn't looking too good - I'm sore and tired and wondering why I think I can do this!

bicycle crash

Last week, my nephew Jacob had a terrible accident on his bike, had to have surgery, and is now in a cast for the summer.  We all feel so bad for him - he is truly the kid that loves to be outside running, riding and climbing.  Now all he can do is walk.  I'm pretty sure that his summer is ruined, but hopefully he will get to have adventures of a different kind.

What do you send a kid that can't do anything?

After thinking about it, we decided to get him a game - Rush Hour, that he can play by himself and manipulate with his good hand.  And of course, had to make him a custom t-shirt that he can use to explain what happened to him.  I'm sure he's going to get tired of telling people about it!

My 1st attempt bled, so Lio has inherited it.  He's already had a minor bike crash this summer, so it is sort of fitting.

So here is attempt #2.  I liked the white on the brown better, but was worried that the shirt wouldn't be big enough for Jacob to fit his cast under comfortably.  Of course the next size up was just wayyyyy too huge.  But I think the green looks nice, too.

Jacob, we love you and miss you!  Off to the post office.

Whistles and the Tooth Fairy

For a few days now, Lio has been wiggling his front tooth - nonstop.  (It's truly one of the few things that makes me really queasy!)  It's the 3rd tooth that he's lost - the 1st was on Christmas, and the 2nd was on Valentine's Day.  I was hoping that this 3rd one could wait a week until the 4th of July, but no such luck with all of that wiggling!  It fell out in the middle of the night when Lio was sleeping, and he found it in his bed this morning.  I am so glad that he didn't swallow it!!!  With the extra space between his teeth, there's an extra bonus... he has learned how to whistle.  And yes, there is a bit of a lisp.

run, john, run!

Saturday John ran a 5k in Over The Rhine.  It was really fun to watch and was pretty inspirational!  It made me want to run, too.

Here he is in the home stretch.  I think he ran pretty fast (around 27 minutes - which is like a 9 minute mile), but he isn't happy with his time.  He's crazy!

And here he is after.  The kids were really proud of him, and I was, too.

Ahhh, that's the girl I know

Decided to cut Lio and Paloma's hair today.  Lio requested to keep it longer, so I just trimmed up the back and sides a bit.  I have a feeling I'm going to have to revisit the top and front - it's always right in his eyes!  (I feel like such a mom of a teenager when I think of it - he really has an opinion!)  Paloma switches between wanting it really long ("like Ellie's"), and totally shaved off ("like daddy's").  Since she isn't the best about leaving ponytails in, I sort of talked her into letting me cut it into a short bob again.  The promise of a popsicle at the end helped.  It wasn't a bribe - it was just really hot out... something to look forward to.  She would have gotten one anyways, even if she didn't want to cut her hair!  I don't think she knew that, though.  I love how it looks, and she's pretty happy, too.  When I see her now, I just think, "Ahhh, that's the girl I know."

strawberry picking (I mean raspberry!)

Today was the day we decided to go strawberry picking.  Instead of having our usual leisurely summer morning, we got ready right after breakfast and drove to Stokes Berry Farm.  I wasn't too sure what to expect - it was an overcast morning and sprinkles started soon after we were on the way.  The rows of strawberries were already picked over, and after only picking two small quarts we were kind of ready to leave.  I'm so glad that we didn't!

Next week was supposed to be the beginning of the farm's raspberry picking season.  Some were already ripe, so we decided to check them out before heading home.

There was fun along the way to the raspberry rows...

and fun racing in the raspberry rows...

and lots of eating fresh picked raspberries along the way.

I wish I had some pictures of the yellow raspberries that we picked, but Lio and Paloma ate them as fast as we were picking them.  Those raspberries were such a great surprise and made for a wonderful morning!

a work in progress

My class this past weekend went pretty well.  I always forget how tired I am after - I guess it's the long drive, standing on a concrete floor all day, and using a part of my brain that hasn't been used in a long time!

I loved learning how to use all of the wood shop power tools - huge table saws, mitre saws, and my favorite... the nail gun.  After constructing my shadow box, I worked on assembling and layering my objects.  I'm still not done, but here's what I ended up with after the weekend:

the running bug

I think that I have talked John into training for the 1/2 marathon with me!  I think it will really help having each other as motivation, and a little competition doesn't hurt either. This will be a really great goal to get us in shape, and will hopefully become a lifestyle change that keeps us healthier.

So guess who else has jumped on the bandwagon?

Yep, Lio and Paloma are all into it now, too!  Lio said he wants to start training, too, so of course Paloma wants to come along.  It was hilarious - Lio needed to get the proper gear before he could start - "running shorts", shoes, t-shirt, but most importantly, the SWEAT BAND.  (He also requested an i-pod - he's just like his dad in that way.  And no, he is not getting one.)  They both ran over a mile, and are already asking when we can train today.  I think it's gonna be fun having the whole family in this together!

knights and castles

We decided to take a little trip to Loveland Castle yesterday.  John and I had been there about 10 years ago, and knew it would be the perfect place to take Lio to let his imagination go!  He was pretty excited - lots of questions about dungeons, dragons and knights.

The castle was built in the 1920's by a man who used to go adventuring with a group of boys - camping, hiking, etc.  They called themselves the Knights of the Golden Trail, and since they called themselves "Knights", the man decided they needed a castle.  He worked on it until he died in his 80's.  It's a pretty quirky place, but also pretty cool to imagine what that whole experience must have been like for those boys.  We had lots of fun exploring the castle and the gardens - a perfect little field trip for a boy into dragons!

done

I got up early this morning and got my run out of the way. My first time running 5 miles! I was dreading it because I knew it would be hard. And it was. But I did it, and finished with a 9 minute average. Done!

(The new shoes were ok. Not perfect, still a little numbness. But not as much as the rainbow shoes. I think I am a little crazy - either for attempting this 1/2 marathon, or for feeling phantom numbness in my limbs.)

(No photo today - I SAID I WAS DONE for the day!)

a jumbled mess and time to simmer

This weekend I have an art class at Miami University's Craftsummer.  It's called 'Woodworking:  Thinking Outside the Box".  We are going to be learning how to use the tools in the woodworking shop to create our own shadow boxes, and then assemble all sorts of objects in the box to create our piece.  It seems like a class that should be a good fit for me - I'm all about collage and putting different things together, building layers - seeing how they can fit.

Today I have been gathering all sorts of things so that I have an idea of how I want to build my shadow box so that the objects will fit.  I am determined not to go out and buy anything, but to use things that I have saved and have meaning to me.  One small problem, though.  Recently I got rid of sooooo much stuff - thinking that since I haven't used it so far, that I probably never would.  It felt good to purge, but now I am sort of regretting it!

Another problem is that my mind is sort of a jumbled mess right now.  I am not the type of artist that can think off the top of my head.  I need time to let ideas simmer and evolve.  So maybe this class will be a good thing for me.  I would still like to have some sort of idea and general plan, but am going to try to react to my materials and let it all unfold.

and the winner is...

Well, I think the winner is, but I can't be too sure.  Last weekend I went to an amazing shoe store and got fitted for my "perfect" running shoe.  The sales guy was great - did all kinds of measurements, taped me running on the treadmill, went over how my feet and legs moved frame by frame, and had me running up and down the sidewalk until I felt like I had a good fit.

The shoe I ended up with was the really ugly shoe that I posted about last week.  It really did feel great, and I got over the fact that I did not like how it looked.  The problem was that when I wore the shoes at home and to run, my feet went numb.  Not good.

So I went back to the shoe store, and had the same sales guy try to find me another fit.  I was there for hours.  Literally.  I wanted to burst into tears from frustration.  I wanted to just leave and come back another day.  My feet were feeling numb and my head was throbbing.  But I stayed, and I'm gonna give these a try.  And if they do fit and feel good, and if I can still feel my feet after a run, I'm going to celebrate with something pretty cool.  That I will post if and when.

summer love

*photos taken at the zoo today*

Today really felt like the first day of summer.  John and Lio are both done with school, and we are so ready to enjoy not having a schedule.  I love the feeling of summer when I don't know what day of the week it is, and don't need to know!  I stayed up late last night watching some silly show, but was up super early because of how bright the sun was shining in the bedroom window.  I got my run out of the way since I was up so early, and we were all out of the house by 8:30 am - headed off to the zoo.  We had a wonderful leisurely visit - no need to rush home to catch Lio's bus!  Paloma finally got to feed the giraffes, and we even had time to catch the cheetah show before heading home.  Summer, I love you.

baby gifts

Last night I had some friends over to share the freezer paper stencil love.  I think everyone had great success and went home with some pretty unique items of clothing!  Afterwards, I was finally able to finish the pieces for my friend who had a baby in April (oops! - a bit late!).  I made 3 onesies for little Max...

...and made a "Big Brother" t-shirt for Alexander that is the same style as Max's.  Just got back from the post office, and can't wait until my friend receives them.  I hope she loves them!

When I Was a Boy

This morning when Paloma and I were playing outside, she got a little warm and asked if she could take her shirt off. It immediately made me think of one of my favorite songs by Dar Williams, 'When I Was a Boy". So far she definitely hasn't been the super girly princess type - much more into dinos and dragons thanks to Lio's influence! I love her, and that little bit of boy that's in her. Hope she can keep him.

Here are the lyrics to the song:

I won't forget when Peter Pan came to my house, took my hand
I said I was a boy; I'm glad he didn't check.
I learned to fly, I learned to fight
I lived a whole life in one night
We saved each other's lives out on the pirate's deck.

And I remember that night
When I'm leaving a late night with some friends
And I hear somebody tell me it's not safe,
someone should help me
I need to find a nice man to walk me home.

When I was a boy, I scared the pants off of my mom,
Climbed what I could climb upon
And I don't know how I survived,
I guess I knew the tricks that all boys knew.

And you can walk me home, but I was a boy, too.

I was a kid that you would like, just a small boy on her bike
Riding topless, yeah, I never cared who saw.
My neighbor come outside to say, "Get your shirt,"
I said "No way, it's the last time I'm not breaking any law."

And now I'm in this clothing store, and the signs say less is more
More that's tight means more to see, more for them, not more for me
That can't help me climb a tree in ten seconds flat

When I was a boy, See that picture? That was me
Grass-stained shirt and dusty knees
And I know things have gotta change,
They got pills to sell, they've got implants to put in,
they've got implants to remove

But I am not forgetting...that I was a boy too

And like the woods where I would creep, it's a secret I can keep
Except when I'm tired, 'cept when I'm being caught off guard
And I've had a lonesome awful day, the conversation finds its way
To catching fire-flies out in the backyard.

And so I tell the man I'm with about the other life I lived
And I say, "Now you're top gun, I have lost and you have won"
And he says, "Oh no, no, can't you see

When I was a girl, my mom and I we always talked
And I picked flowers everywhere that I walked.
And I could always cry, now even when I'm alone I seldom do
And I have lost some kindness
But I was a girl too.
And you were just like me, and I was just like you"

1st and (almost) last

Here's a picture of Lio on his first day of Kindergarten:

And here's a picture of him today, the day before his very LAST day as a Kindergartener:

WOW.  Is it just me, or does he look so much older?!

teacher thankyou

It's hard to believe that this is the last week of Lio's kindergarten!  This year has gone by so fast, yet so much has happened.  He has turned into an amazing reader, and he never ceases to surprise me with how quickly he can grasp concepts.  His memory is  quite amazing, too!

He's also gotten so much more independent.  He was the one who was pushing to ride the bus when I wanted to drop him off each day, just to make sure he got to his room safe and sound.  I was a wreck that whole first day he rode the bus, crying over everything.  I still want to drive him - he's learned a little too much from those other kids on the bus.  It's hard letting go!

I'm ready for this year to be over, though.  It's been full of growing pains for me - learning to let go, but also knowing when to stand up for him when I didn't think his needs were being met.  I hope that next year I'm a bit better at it.

Here's what we came up with as a thankyou for his classroom teacher, and his favorite reading teacher:

Lio used his finger prints to create the caterpillar, and hand prints to create the butterfly inside.  He came up with the idea to use the same color pattern for the caterpillar as was in the butterfly wings.  He surprised me again - I thought it was a wonderful idea!

a "perfect" fit

A few days ago I went to an "official" running shoe store to get some advice on what type of running shoe I should get.  The sales person measures your feet, looks at the wear on your old shoes, watches how you walk... all to recommend the shoe that should fit perfectly.  This is the shoe that is supposed to be perfect for me:
I have to admit, it really felt good.  So soft and cushiony.  Like I could run for miles.  But why does it have to be so ugly?!  I know that the fit is the most important... but why, oh why does it have to be so ugly?!  I'm gonna go to a few other stores to get some other recommendations.  I hope that there are some cuter styles out there that feel just as good.  Is it wrong to want to look cute while sweating up a storm, stumbling, and gasping for air?  I think it's the least I deserve after all of that!

Strange

Can you guess what this is?

We had a hail storm this weekend.

The storm was pretty strong, and lasted only a short while.
After it was all done, it looked a bit like winter in the middle of spring.
The ground was covered with ice balls, some the size of marbles.

The sky was filled with swirls.  Two tornadoes touched down not too far from us!

We are so lucky that the storm passed on quickly from us.
We have had the strangest weather this year!
